On 1 January 2025, FH JOANNEUM officially launched RADIUS: Research in Artificial Intelligence for Development, Innovation and Upgraded Security. The project is designed as a forward-looking, cross-departmental research initiative focused on strengthening AI expertise for systems, software engineering, and IT security.
Running until 31 December 2029, RADIUS is described by FH JOANNEUM as its largest COIN project to date, with a budget of EUR 1,750,395 and a team of 28 experts at launch. The project builds on existing strengths at the university of applied sciences while adding a complementary AI research group with a strong focus on generative AI and large language models.
Its main goal is to develop capabilities, best practices, frameworks, and training formats for industrial applications of AI. During the kickoff, the work packages highlighted included AI systems, AI in software engineering, AI in security, dissemination, and practical use cases in collaboration with sectors such as aviation, embedded systems, banking, and insurance.
30 companies had already signaled support through letters of intent, indicating strong industry interest. That early momentum underlines the practical relevance of the project and its ambition to create a foundation for future AI research and innovation.
